  • About UX Certification

NN/g-certified User Experience practitioners demonstrate high-level dedication to UX education, participating in at least 30 hours of training and passing 5 exams with a score of 80% or higher on each. More than 40 courses and hundreds of topics suit a variety of needs.

    • UX Certification: To earn an NN/g UX Certificate, complete any 5 full-day NN/g courses and pass an exam for each course. There are no prerequisites for taking our courses, and no time limit for completing all 5 courses. For courses that span multiple days, each day counts as a separate course and has its own exam.

    Expert Options

The options below are not required in order to achieve a UX Certificate, but are available to recognize special achievements.

    • UX Master Certification recognizes practitioners whose extensive training covers a broad range of topics. To achieve UX Master Certification, complete any 10 additional courses—for a total of 15 full-day NN/g courses—and pass an exam for each course. UX Master Certification replaces UX Certification; courses taken toward UX Certification also count toward UX Master Certification.
    • Specialty designations recognize depth of training in a particular topic, and are added to the UX Certificate (or UX Master Certificate) once you complete 5 courses within that Specialty topic area. Currently there are five available Specialties: UX Management (NEW), Interaction Design, Mobile Design, Web Design, and UX Research. Specialties are not required for UX Certification. Learn more about Specialties and Specialty course options.

    Suggested Course Paths

Our UX Certification program is designed to let you study any topics of interest; there are no required courses. For people who prefer a suggested path of courses for UX Certification, consider these:

    Benefits of UX Certification

Spend your training budget effectively on NN/g courses and UX Certification, which offer:

    • Thousands of UX-related topics
    • Findings from hundreds of research studies about current usability and design best practices
    • Hundreds of practical design guidelines—and the theories and user stories that inform them
    • Flexible requirements that let you choose courses to suit your needs
    • Exams that test both theoretical and practical knowledge about best practices and how to apply them

Invest in your career and education. UX Certificates show prospective clients, employers, managers, and colleagues your dedication to and interest in the field, as well as your expanding knowledge of it.

    • Build a solid foundation: New practitioners can gain knowledge and prove their mastery of it
    • Refresh skills and learn new ones: Experienced UX professionals can acquire specific knowledge, brush up on the basics, or learn new skills. Even if you have a university degree in a UX-related area, UX Certification can invigorate your qualifications.
    • Distinguish yourself and add credentials: Job seekers can add UX Certification to their résumé and get a leg up.
    • Convince other people about UX: Gain authority, confidence, and credibility.
    • Transition from a different field to UX: Get introductory and advanced training from a competent source to kick start your new career.
    • Earn a “stamp of approval”: Consultants and agencies can set themselves apart from the competition to help win bids.
    • Enhance your career: Choose courses that compliment your specific interests and needs.
    • Work toward self-improvement: Certification shows a commitment to continual growth and advancement
    • Benefit from previous Usability Week experiences: If you have already invested your time and money into taking our courses, taking the exams can get you certified.

UX Certification will get your teams up and running in user experience and give all team members the groundwork needed to make concrete design and development decisions based on training rather than opinion.

    • Build consistency and speak the same language: Studying our varied topics can build consistency in knowledge and practice across teams, especially between multiple teams at organizations large and small.
    • Reach a desired level of expertise: Achieve a common knowledge and expertise level on your team and between teams. Realize common ground and agreement.
    • Start a UX group: Let experts with years of experience starting UX teams launch your team. Get everyone up to speed with the best foundation for research and design, which they can build upon for years to come. Acquiring ROI and other tools for your collection will sell UX to everyone at the organization.
    • Refresh usability expertise: Rejuvenate your awareness of design guidelines and up-to-date best practices. Reinforce or round out your team’s design and research toolbox.
    • Increase credibility: As outside consultants, our researchers can help grow your team’s confidence, positively affecting other people’s perceptions of the team.
    • Create a central review team: Set up an internal teaching and monitoring team to ensure UX design and research are sound and efficient across the organization. Benefit from having all of your teams share collective goals. Gain an extra level of credibility to shore up your central team’s success.
    • Balance your team: When individual team members acquire different UX Specialties, your team will be poised to meet any design challenge.
    • Hire the right people: Look for a certain level of knowledge from job interviewees before they are hired (or possibly even interviewed).
    • Provide background to QA teams: Help QA teams integrate usability and UX into their test scripts and processes. Focus on actual user tasks when testing software quality.

  • Process for Achieving UX Certification

    Process & Pricing

    • Choose from more than 40 full-day courses offered at Usability Week, or bring NN/g courses in-house and study with your whole team. Participate in the courses that suit your needs or, if you opt for a Specialty, choose from among the required sets of courses.
    • You will have 35 calendar days after the last day of Usability Week to pass an exam for each of the courses you took.
    • After you have completed the training, NN/g will email a summary of your courses and a link to an exam for each one.
    • You can take each exam up to 3 times. Note: We recommend taking the exam using a device that is not subject to a strict firewall, as these may cause issues with the exam.
    • NN/g tracks the exams you pass (you can also check the status of your own courses and exams online).
    • Once you have completed the required courses and passed the associated exams, you will receive your UX Certification, UX Master Certification, or Specialties Certification!
    • NN/g will send you an official certificate and badge via email, and you can then post them online as desired.

You can choose to take all courses required for UX Certification during a single Usability Week or over a longer period of time. Or, you might consider hiring NN/g to train and UX certify your team on-site. In either case, NN/g will keep track of your courses and the exams you pass. There is no timeframe during which you must take all courses in order to be UX Certified, and credit for courses you take does not expire. However, you must pass the exam for the course within 35 calendar days of your training for NN/g to count the course credit.

    UX Certification Does Not Expire

NN/g courses are designed to give attendees a solid, lasting foundation, so once you achieve UX Certification or Specialties, they do not expire. However, we do encourage people to continue UX training to update their skills and learn new ones. Each UX Certificate lists the certification date, and NN/g reissues certificates when additional courses are taken and exams are passed. So, revitalizing your training also refreshes your UX Certification date.

Online Courses, Standalone Exams, and Past Courses

UX Certification credit is offered only for participants in our full-day, in-person training courses.

    • Online courses are not available for UX Certification.
    • Exams are meant to measure attendees’ learning, and are available only to people who have participated in NN/g UX training.
    • Courses attended in the past are not eligible for UX Certification, since exams are based on current course content and do not apply to past courses.

    Timing and Scheduling

You can be UX Certified in a little more than one week.

    • UX Certificate: You can participate in enough courses during one Usability Week to achieve a UX Certificate (most Usability Week conferences last 5 days, though some last up to 7 days).
      • Take an exam for each course online a few days after you complete the courses. Each exam takes approximately 30 minutes.
    • UX Master Certificate: To meet course requirements for a UX Master Certificate, you would need to participate in 3 separate Usability Week conferences.
    • Specialties: Sometimes it is possible to achieve a Specialty at a single conference when all of the required specialized courses are offered. This is not always possible, however, and you will often need to attend two conferences.

Locations and Timing of Usability Week Conferences

NN/g Usability Week Conferences are offered at various intervals in cities around the world. Check the current schedule for cities and dates near you.

Although dates and locations vary year to year, we almost always hold Usability Weeks in the following major cities:

    • San Francisco (every year)
    • New York City (every year)
    • Washington, D.C (every second year)
    • Chicago (every year)
    • Las Vegas (every year)
    • London (2 per year)
    • Continental Europe (every second year)
    • Sydney or Melbourne (every second year)

Other cities we have also held Usability Weeks in.

    Credentials (Designatory Letters)

After you achieve UX Certification, you are welcome to display the following designatory letters after your name:

    • UXC, for people with UX Certification
    • UXMC, for people with UX Master Certification

(Specialties do not have designatory letters.)

  • Exams for UX Certification

Professionals who spend more than 30 hours in our intensive training demonstrate a high-level commitment to their UX education. An exam helps us verify participants’ content retention and apply concepts practically. To be certified, each person must pass an exam for each course. Exams are available only to people who recently participated in the courses.

    Exam Format

    Each course's exam:

    • tests two types of understanding: 1) knowledge of theories and topics, and 2) practical ability to apply that knowledge to real-world situations and examples;
    • is written to be fair and based on the topics, theories, and examples the instructor covered during the course;
    • is online and multiple choice;
    • can be taken anywhere you have a computer and internet connection (though not with a very strict firewall);
    • has up to 35 questions; and
    • varies from test to test (we have many questions for each course and pull each exam’s questions from this pool to generate a specific test).

    Taking Exams

    • NN/g sends course attendees an email within 5 business days of the last day of the Usability Week Conference they attended. The email contains links to the exam for each of the courses attended; if participants have not previously paid the exam administration fee, they will be asked to pay it at this point.
    • The exam must be passed within 35 calendar days of the last day of Usability Week in order to apply the course credit toward UX Certification. After this period there will be no other opportunity to apply the course credit toward UX Certification.
    • Participants can take an exam up to 3 times until they achieve a passing score of 80% or higher; the exam expires after the third attempt.
    • One hour is allowed for each exam. Most people take about 30 minutes to complete an exam.
    • We recommend taking the exam as soon as possible, while the information from training is fresh in the attendee's mind.
    • We recommend using a computer (and not a mobile device) that is not subject to a strict firewall, as some firewalls can cause issues with the exam.
    • Participants can refer to the materials given during the course, as well as any notes they took while in class; they may not consult other sources or confer with other people.
    • Participants may pause the exam to review their notes or take a break.

    Exam Administration Fees

The exam administration fee ($50 USD per course exam, €40 EUR, £30 GBP, $55 CAD, or $55 AUD) is in addition to the tuition cost and covers administrative expenses related to exams and certifications, including writing exam questions; editing questions (for improvement or when course content changes); technology to create and update the exams; tracking scores and certification credits; and maintaining verifiable certification information.

Exam administration fees can be paid with Usability Week registration or prior to taking an exam. Exam administrative fees paid prior to or during Usability Week are subject to the same refund policy as tuition; exam fees paid after Usability Week are non-refundable.

Although Nielsen Norman Group teaches UX courses and requires that candidates pass exams for certification, NN/g is neither a university nor a learning institution. Rather, our UX training courses provide an opportunity for people to learn from some of the best UX experts in the world and thereby refine their knowledge and skills.

  • Optional: UX Certification Specialties

Specialties are not required for UX Certification or UX Master Certification. They are designed for people who want to learn as much as possible about a particular topic. Choose to become an expert in any of the 5 Specialty areas:

    • NEW UX Management: Learn to integrate UX successfully by leading UX activities and mature or inexperienced teams. Apply known UX and management practices to effectively plan, communicate, negotiate, control, and measure UX work, people, and processes.
    • Interaction Design: Learn tenets that you can apply to any design situation, including websites, mobile UX, complex and simple software applications, and consumer products.
    • Mobile Design: Discover up-to-date best practices and user behavior when designing for different screen displays and mobile use; topics covered include design for phones and tablets; and inputs such as touch, gestures, and voice.
    • Web Design: Explore a broad range of topics relating to both fundamental underlying principles and hands-on practical tips for designing successful, usable websites.
    • UX Research: Cover the gamut of UX research methods and get hands-on experience in executing the techniques effectively and soundly.

    Requirements for Specialties

    • Achieving a Specialty automatically grants UX Certification, as the 5 courses and exams required for a Specialty also meet the UX Certification requirements.
    • Select any 5 courses from the set of possible courses for the particular Specialty.
    • Attend 5 full-day courses (30 training hours). For courses that span multiple days, each day counts as a separate course.
    • Pass an exam for each of the 5 courses.
