  • About NN/g UX Certificates and Specialties

    Certified practitioners demonstrate high-level dedication to UX education, participating in at least 30 hours of training and passing at least 5 exams with a score of 80% or higher on each. More than 40 courses and hundreds of topics suit a variety of needs.

    Requirements & Options

    There are no prerequisites for taking our courses.

    • UX Certification (Option 1): Complete any 5 full-day NN/g courses and pass an exam for each course. (For courses that span multiple days, each day counts as a separate course.)
    • UX Master Certification (Option 2): Complete any 10 additional courses—for a total of 15 full-day NN/g courses—and pass an exam for each course. (UX Master Certification replaces UX Certification; courses taken toward UX Certification also count toward UX Master Certification.)
    • Specialties (not required for UX Certification or UX Master Certification): Achieving a Specialty automatically grants UX Certification. Enhance your UX Certification or UX Master Certification by taking courses identified as part of four optional areas of focus: Interaction Design, Mobile Design, Web Design, or UX Research.

    Timing

    You can choose to take all courses required for UX Certification during a single Usability Week or over a longer period of time. Or, you might consider hiring NN/g to train and UX certify your team on-site. In either case, NN/g will keep track of your courses and the exams you pass. There is no timeframe during which you must take all courses in order to be certified, and course credit does not expire. However, you must pass the exam for the course within 35 calendar days of the last day of Usability Week for NN/g to count the course credit.

    UX Certification Does Not Expire

    NN/g courses are designed to give attendees a solid, lasting foundation, so once you achieve UX Certification or Specialties, they do not expire. However, we do encourage people to continue UX training to update their skills and learn new ones. Each UX Certificate lists the certification date, and NN/g reissues certificates when additional courses are taken and exams are passed. So, revitalizing your training also refreshes your UX Certification date.

    Exams for In-Person Training Only

    UX Certification credit is offered only for our full-day, in-person training courses. Courses are not available online for UX Certification. Exams are meant to measure attendees’ learning, and are available only to people who have participated in NN/g UX training.

    Suggested Course Paths

    Our UX Certification program is designed to let you study any topics of interest; there are no required courses. For people who prefer a suggested path of courses for UX Certification, consider these:

    Specialties

    Specialties are optional, and are designed for people who want to learn as much as possible about a particular topic. They are not required for UX Certification or UX Master Certification, but you can choose to become an expert in one of four Specialty areas:

    • Interaction Design: Teaches tenets that you can apply to any design situation, including websites, mobile UX or, complex and simple software applications, and consumer products.
    • Mobile Design: Exposes up-to-date best practices and user behavior when designing for different screen displays and mobile use; topics covered include design for phones and tablets, and inputs such as touch, gestures, and voice.
    • Web Design: Discusses a broad range of topics relating to both fundamental underlying principles and hands-on practical tips for designing successful, usable websites.
    • UX Research: Covers the gamut of UX research methods and includes hands-on experience in executing the techniques effectively and soundly.

    We plan to add and modify Specialties over time to accommodate evolving UX methods and practices.

    Requirements for Specialties

    • Achieving a Specialty automatically grants UX Certification, as the 5 courses and exams required for a Specialty also meet the UX Certification requirements.
    • Select any 5 courses from the set of possible courses for the particular Specialty.
    • Attend 5 full-day courses (30 training hours). For courses that span multiple days, each day counts as a separate course.
    • Pass an exam for each of the 5 courses.

    Process for Achieving UX Certification

    1. Choose from more than 40 full-day courses offered at Usability Week, or bring NN/g courses in-house and study with your whole team. Participate in the courses that suit your needs or, if you opt for a Specialty, choose from among the required sets of courses.
    2. You will have 35 calendar days after the last day of Usability Week to pass an exam for each of the courses you took.
    3. After you have completed the training, NN/g will email a summary of your courses and a link to an exam for each one.
    4. You can take each exam up to 3 times. Note: We recommend taking the exam using a device that is not subject to a strict firewall, as these may cause issues with the exam.
    5. NN/g tracks the exams you pass (you can also check the status of your own courses and exams online).
    6. Once you have completed the required courses and passed the associated exams, you will receive your UX Certification, UX Master Certification, or Specialties Certification!
    7. NN/g will send you an official certificate and badge via email, and you can then post them online as desired.

    Price Estimates and Scheduling

    The main UX Certification investments include the following:

    • Time spent in full-day training courses, travel to Usability Week Conferences, or in-house training sessions.
    • Time spent taking exams online at your convenience. Exams require approximately 30 minutes each, which works out to
      • 2.5 hours for the 5 exams required to achieve UX Certification, and
      • 7.5 hours for the 15 exams required to achieve UX Master Certification.
    • The costs for training courses (the same as standard Usability Week pricing).
    • An administrative fee of $50 USD per exam (€40 EUR, £30 GBP, $55 CAD, or $55 AUD).
    • Exam administrative fees paid prior to or during Usability Week are subject to the same refund policy as tuition; Exam fees paid after Usability Week are non-refundable.

    Certification candidates can pay exam administration fees when they register for Usability Week or prior to taking exams.

    Timing and Scheduling

    You can be UX Certified in a little more than one week.

    • UX Certificate: You can participate in enough courses during one Usability Week to achieve a UX Certificate (most Usability Week conferences last 5 days, though some last up to 7 days).
      • Take an exam for each course online a few days after you complete the courses. Each exam takes approximately 30 minutes.
    • UX Master Certificate: To meet course requirements for a UX Master Certificate, you would need to participate in 3 separate Usability Week conferences.
    • Specialties: Sometimes it is possible to achieve a Specialty at a single conference when all of the required specialized courses are offered. This is not always possible, however, and you will often need to attend two conferences.

    NN/g Usability Week Conferences are offered at various intervals in cities around the world. Check the current schedule for cities and dates near you.

    Although dates and locations vary year to year, we almost always hold Usability Weeks in the following major cities:

  • Exams for UX Certification

    Professionals who spend more than 30 hours in our intensive training demonstrate a high-level commitment to their UX education. An exam helps us verify participants’ content retention and apply concepts practically. To be certified, each person must pass an exam for each course. Exams are available only to people who participated in the courses.

    Exam Format

    Each course's exam:

    • tests two types of understanding: 1) knowledge of theories and topics, and 2) practical ability to apply that knowledge to real-world situations and examples;
    • is written to be fair and based on the topics, theories, and examples the instructor covered during the course;
    • is online and multiple choice;
    • has up to 35 questions; and
    • varies from test to test (we have many questions for each course and pull each exam’s questions from this pool to generate a specific test).

    Taking Exams

    • NN/g sends course attendees an email within 5 business days of the last day of the Usability Week Conference they attended. The email contains links to the exam for each of the courses attended; if participants have not previously paid the exam administration fee, they will be asked to pay it at this point.
    • The exam must be passed within 35 calendar days of the last day of Usability Week in order to apply the course credit toward UX Certification. After this period there will be no other opportunity to apply the course credit toward UX Certification.
    • Participants can take an exam up to 3 times until they achieve a passing score of 80% or higher; the exam expires after the third attempt.
    • Each exam usually takes about 30 minutes to complete.
    • We recommend taking the exam using a device that is not subject to a strict firewall, as some firewalls can cause issues with the exam.
    • Participants can refer to the materials given during the course, as well as any notes they took while in class; they may not consult other sources or confer with other people.

    Exam Administration Fees

    The exam administration fee ($50 USD per course exam, €40 EUR, £30 GBP, $55 CAD, or $55 AUD) is in addition to the tuition cost and covers administrative expenses related to exams and certifications, including writing exam questions; editing questions (for improvement or when course content changes); technology to create and update the exams; tracking scores and certification credits; and maintaining verifiable certification information.

    Exam administration fees can be paid with Usability Week registration or prior to taking an exam. Exam administrative fees paid prior to or during Usability Week are subject to the same refund policy as tuition; exam fees paid after Usability Week are non-refundable.
