Anthropic’s Dataset

Anthropic used the following 2 data sources:

  • One million Claude.ai conversations carried out during Dec 2024-Jan 2025
  • Descriptions of occupations and corresponding tasks from the O*NET database of occupations provided by the U.S. Department of Labor; this database contains approximately 20,000 task descriptions

Then it used a Claude-based analysis tool to assign each conversation to a single task. Once each conversation was thus classified, the Anthropic team calculated the percentage of Claude conversations that were assigned to each task. This dataset is publicly available.

NN/g’s Analysis

Out of the 20,000 task descriptions and corresponding occupations in the OPEC dataset, I selected a subset of 203 tasks that were within the realm of a UX or UX-adjacent professional. These corresponded to 18 different O*NET occupations, signaling broad categories of tasks that a UX or a UX-adjacent professional (such as a product manager or technical writer) may be doing.

Below is a list of the categories I included. For each category, I list the total number of occupational tasks (whether UX related or not), an example of a UX task related to that category, as well as the number of UX tasks that were included in our set of tasks. For each occupation, you can also see the percentage of tasks (not necessarily UX-related) that were attempted with AI.

For example, for the category Computer and Information Systems Managers, there were 17 possible tasks. 41.2% of these (7) were attempted with AI. Of all the 17 tasks, a single task was considered as related to UX.

For each of the categories in the table above and their UX-related tasks, I retrieved the percentage of AI conversations related to that task from the Anthropic dataset. All my analyses manipulated these percentages. For example, to see how many conversations were related to UX, I simply added the percentage of AI conversations for each UX task.

A full list of UX tasks for each occupational category is available in the spreadsheet available as a download.
