The fourth edition includes updated recommendations and examples — with 300 modern and relevant guidelines and 800 recent intranet screenshots based on research conducted at 15 organizations (plus the 42 from studies for volumes one and two).

This edition also covers:

  • Intranet content strategy and governance processes
  • Successful information architectures and pitfalls to avoid

  • Visual design techniques, including intranet design systems

Research Methods

The information in these reports is based on four separate rounds of user research with organizations' employees as participants. We used four different research methods:

  • One-on-one usability testing
  • Field studies (we observed employees as they worked)
  • Interviews with intranet teams and content managers
  • Expert reviews

The studies occurred in the United States, the United Kingdom, Finland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, and China (Hong Kong).
