Summary

This page contains still photos from Nielsen Norman Group's training video on paper prototyping.

If you already have the old video (which we released in 2003), should you buy this new video? Not if you're only watching it for your own sake. But if you're an educator showing the training video in your classes, we highly recommend using the new release. It looks much better in HD. (Also, there have been many small changes in the recommended methodology, and the demonstration of mobile UI testing now shows an iPhone app, not a WAP app, which is more motivating for your students.)

Sample Scenes from the Video

Jakob Nielsen and Hoa Loranger presenting the basics of paper prototyping. Still from the new video.
Introduction: What is paper prototyping and why we recommend it.

User, facilitator and person playing 'the computer' in the usability lab for a test session. HD video
Conducting a usability study session with paper prototypes.

Transaction-oriented web page being tested as a hand-drawn screen. This is a low fidelity prototype, because it doesn't look like the finished product, but users can still engage with the task flow and the features shown in the drawings.
Simulating interactions without any coding.

Mock-up of a simple form
Close-up of test participant interacting with low-fidelity form.

Homepage idea, fully rendered in color, being tested with a printout. This is a high fidelity prototype that looks just like the final website.
Getting user feedback with higher-fidelity prototypes.

User testing of a paper mock-up of a mobile app.
Paper prototyping for mobile devices.

Testing a kiosk that has been mocked-up with paper buttons and slots.
Applying paper prototyping techniques across platforms: here testing a mockup vending machine.
